  • Opengear cellular products by default work in packet switched (PSD) mode across the public Internet or telco managed IP-WANs. By default they do not operate in circuit switched (CSD) mode like a dial-up modem and answer data calls. However expert users/developers can program them to operate in CSD mode for legacy applications.
  • To use an Opengear cellular product you need a corporate mobile data service/plan (and a SIM card for GSM) from your telco provider with a public (static or dynamic) IP address. If your plan only provides a private IP address which is not visible across the Internet:
    • you can deploy a VCMS or CMS6100 at the central location which will provides a gateway to remote cellular units
    • these cellular devices can also be accessed over corporate VPNs using IPSec or OpenSSL
  • Access to remote cellular devices is via a secure browser (HTTPS), secure terminal emulators (SSH)
    • Opengear’s SDTConnector SSH tunnelling software enables access specific network services (RDP, VNC, SOL, KVM over IP)
    • Opengear cellular products also support M2M applications, serial COM port redirection (PortShare), serial bridging and digital I/O control
    • Managed devices on the Opengear device’s private network can be securely IP accessible from VPN clients or the corporate VPN
